When Megyn Kelly left Fox News earlier this month, she assumed that the network would be lost without her. However, this past week she learned just how wrong she was when her replacement Tucker Carlson absolutely schooled her in the ratings.
The Gateway Pundit reported that Carlson’s ratings during his first week in Kelly’s time slot were up 27% from her ratings the previous year. He reportedly averaged 493,000 viewers in the key 25-54 demo, beating out CNN’s town hall special with Bernie Sanders (414,000) and The Rachel Maddow Show (324,000). He ended up garnering 2.699 million total viewers overall, topping the combined total of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show (1.369 million) and CNN’s town hall special (1.357 million).
Carlson was up a staggering 45 percent over Kelly in the key 25-54 demographic.
Clearly, Fox News is doing just fine without Megyn Kelly!
This came after Newsweek reported that though Fox eventually offered Kelly $100 million to stay at the network, she instead opted to take a deal at NBC News. Though her salary has not yet been revealed to the public, sources close to the negotiations say that it is between $17-18 million. Though she was given a three show deal, experts say that each of her three programs are recipes for failure.
The first show Kelly was given was a daytime talk show, which has few models for success. Hard news hosts like Kelly don’t tend to do well in the soft, fluffy world of daytime, so it is predicted that this show will fail quickly. Secondly, Kelly was given a Sunday night news show, which is typically a leader in ratings losses. With that time slot, it will be exceedingly difficult for Kelly to develop any kind of loyal fanbase.
Finally, the door has been left open for the hard-hitting Kelly to join the incredibly soft, 9am hour of the Today show. If she were to do this, she would likely fail faster than she will on her other two NBC shows.
